March Birthstone: Auquamarine
Aquamarine
Aquamarine from the Latin aqua marina means "sea water".
Aquamarine is part of the Beryl family; it is therefore the little cousin of the emerald. Its color goes from clear blue transparent (the most popular color today) to a deeper blue with green tints, also close to topaz in appearance. The lapidary takes into account the original shape of the crystal when cutting a stone, to respect its structure and to prevent it from splitting. However, as beryl crystals are often fairly elongated in nature, most of the beautiful aquamarines and emeralds are cut into rectangles with cut-off sides - a size that has been renamed "emerald-cut".
Aquamarine is one of the most appreciated stones in the world. Its color and its reflections, close to those of the water. The sailors, fishermen, and travelers saw this stone as a powerful talisman for people sailing at sea, called "the Stone of the Sailor" and the "Stone of Courage".
For centuries, this timeless gemstone has been a symbol of youth, hope, health and fidelity. Since this gemstone is the color of water and the sky, it is said to embody eternal life. It was long thought that Aquamarine has a soothing influence on married couples, making it a good anniversary gift.
